KIT CAR SHOW 1997

The Tornado Tempest was an intermediate model bridging the Ford side valve based Typhoon to the advanced 4 seater GT Talisman. The body is basically the same as the Tornado Typhoon however the model has a more complex tubular chassis, and has coil spring front suspension. Power comes from the more modern overhead valve Ford 105E power unit. With a kerb weight of 9 3/4 cwt for this two seater (4 seat and Sportsbrake versions were also available) and a power output of 39 bph at 5000 rev/min the Tempest performs well. The Tornado Tempest was announced in 1960 and exhibited at the London Racing Car shows in 1961 and 1962. This vehicle is one of the ten Tempest built. 435 WNO is the only known surviving example in the UK. The original price of a kit which came as a complete package of new parts was £595, an assembled car was available ex-works at £1167. This vehicle features a unique "fast back" which was added by an enthusiastic owner in the late 1960s. The present owner completed a full restoration during the 1980s and the car has been in regular use since.

At the 1997 Stafford Kit Car Show, we asked these two clownsto pose with the Tornado for an "unusual photograph".

However the male clown became so interested in the 1960's carsthat he promptly bought a Falcon that was also displayed on the stand. You just cannot get rid of some people!

FIAT 600 GT

FANCY doing 130 m.p.h over the kilometer mark at the annual Brighton Speed trials in a Fiat 600? Two brave gentlemen known as Render and Bekaert do each year. Whilst Mr Bekaert only produces his bolide about twice a year, as much as an excuse for meeting old friends as for the racing, David Render can be seen at the leading hill climbs and sprints most weekends come rain, shine or earthquake.

Tornado Thunderbolt. This car is raced by Bill Dentinger and Bob Wismer in the USA. It features an original 2 seat Tornado body and a more recent specially made chassis which was made after extensive studying of the original works racing Thunderbolt.

WATFORD CHEETAH

This Tornado is actually a Watford Cheetah, these were made by a breakaway group of Tornado employees. Well worth a separate section on the site as they are certainly part of the story.
